Enhancing Scholarly Publishing in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Innovation through Hybrid Forms of Publication

The first objective of this project is to develop hybrid forms of publications. These will consist of Web sites to complement four books originally or currently being prepared as printed volumes for commercial and university-based publishers. These Web sites will contain a broad range of features that are designed to enhance the printed versions of these books with regard to:
• supplementary resources (e.g., links, blogs, chapter appendices, author profiles);
• chapter visualizations (e.g., animations, figures, tables) in color;
• hyperlinks, both internal and external to the book texts;

Knowledge Space Lab

The project “Knowledge Space Lab - mapping knowledge interactively” contributes to the new research area of mapping and modelling of science. The project addresses the difference between representing scholarly knowledge in (external) classification systems (such as thesauri, ontologies, bibliographic systems) and “internal” representations based on data- and user-tagging (such as network analysis, user annotations/tagging, folksonomies).

COST MP 0801 "Physics of Competition and Conflicts"

Recently physicists have extended ideas of atoms and lattices to more generalized concepts of agents and networks and are facilitating new understanding of systems traditionally the province of other disciplines. Applications include, for example, competition between firms, mergers and acquisitions, evolutionary dynamics, cultural change and transportation networks. Set to undergo a renaissance in the 21st century, the area of complexity, rooted in statistical physics and probability theory is at the core of these developments.
