Created by Almila Akdag Salah, an expert in the field of digital humanities and art history, Cheng Gao, a computer scientist and scientific programmer, Krzysztof Suchecki, a specialist in complex networks and sociophysics, and Andrea Scharnhorst, Head of Research at Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, this map shows the differences between the category structure of Wikipedia and the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system. Shown on the left is the main tree structure of Wikipedia categories (top-four levels).

The aim of this special issue is to present selected contributions of the workshop “Modelling science – understanding, forecasting and communicating the science system”, held in Amsterdam October 6-9, 2008.

Why modelling science?

Mathematical models of scientific activity have been proposed during centuries. There seems to be a certain resonance between progress in mathematical modelling techniques and proposed models of science. This talk describes a specific kind of modelling science rooted in theories of self-organization, evolution and complexity as developed by phycisists. It addresses the challenges for the modelling building processes as well for its implementation. The talk also reflects about the epistemic function of models.
